Introduction: Status Epileplicus (SE) is an emergency associated with a high morbi-mortality. The prognosis is determined by the type of SE, age and its early treatment. Objective: To classify ES according to its etiology, type of crisis, gender, neuroradiology and relate these findings with the neurological damage detected during follow up. Patients and methods: 25 children were studied between 1998 and 2003, and analyzed according to age, gender, type of ES, etiology, neuroradiology and morbi-mortality. Results: The average age was 33 months, 64% were boys. 76% of SE were convulsive (CSE) and 26% non-convulsive (NCSE). The etiology was remote in 44%, acute 40%, febrile 12% and idiopathic in 4%. No deaths but neurological damage occurred in 35% of previously healthy children. Sequela were related to the etiology and not to the type of crisis. Conclusions: CSE was the most frequent type of SE and remote the principal etiology. Prognosis depends on the etiology and not to age or type of crisis.
