- ItemNatural speech in the globalized era : reading and telling stories in the EFL classroom(2020) Márquez Moreno, Verónica; Ramay, Allison; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Facultad de LetrasThis Action-Research seeks to explore students’ natural conversations by telling personal stories. To help students’ oral performance, in this research project students read short stories from around the globe and then analyzed them critically followed by a classroom discussion about social issues. This was done for two reasons: to raise students’ cultural awareness and to provide a platform for them to think and speak about their personal memories, stories, and experiences. This study emphasizes the need to take into account spoken grammar in the EFL classroom, and shows the positive effects of using literature to address social problems in the classroom conversation, and for students to connect these telling personal stories.
- ItemTeaching politeness to develop intercultural competence in EFL students in the Chilean context(2020) Bravo Araya, Camila; Ortiz López, Juan Eduardo; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Facultad de LetrasThis Action Research project was conducted in a school in Santiago, Chile, from the necessity of helping ninth-grade students develop the intercultural competence in the foreign language class (English as a foreign language) through politeness principles. In order to do so, a qualitative approach was adopted where students were exposed to a first focus group followed by an intervention; a set of activities focused on producing language, to promote the acknowledgment of politeness patterns and the development of the intercultural competence skill. The success of the intervention was measured by a second focus group, which was compared to the first one to draw conclusions on students’ perceptions and the improvement of their intercultural skills.
