- ItemInfluence of modeling in load flow analysis of three phase distribution systems(IEEE, 1990) Rudnick Van de Wyngard, Hugh; Muñoz Montecinos, Cristián MarceloThe authors present a comparison of three phase load flow algorithms for distribution power systems. Reference is made to traditional single-phase load flow methods used in transmission systems and the main three-phase load flow methods used in distribution. Studies of two Chilean distribution networks are made with an algorithm based on the power summation method, and a comparison of errors and the influence of modeling are reported.<>

- ItemA sensor for assessing the quality of the mineral flotation process(IEEE, 1994) Guarini Hermann Marcelo Walter; Caceres Collao Jaime Enrique; Guesalaga Meissner Andres Rodrigo; Cipriano Zamorano Aldo; Olmedo Hidalgo Juan Carlos; Lozano Segura Hector AndresAn instrument to assess the quality of the flotation process for mineral concentration in the copper industry has been developed. It is based on computer processing of images of the foam formed at the surface of flotation cells, that are captured by a CCD camera. The instrument evaluates the size, shape and color parameters of the foam bubbles, which, according to experienced plant operators, are associated with the quality of the flotation process. It is being used for supporting plant operator control decisions, and to correlate the calculated parameters with the performance of the flotation process. In future applications, it can be used as a sensor for a fuzzy logic or neural net based control system.<>
- ItemCNC control of a laser cutting machine(IEEE, 1994) Chiang Sánchez, Luciano Eduardo; Ramos Grez, JorgeThis article describes the design and construction of a low power laser cutting machine with three degrees of freedom for applications such as wood, textile fabrics and the like. An available 10 Watt laser gun is used to provide the cutting mechanism. The results show that such a machine is feasible at a reasonable cost for applications where speed and repeatability are more important than high precision and power.<>
- ItemA fuzzy logic based model computes cardiac output from the radial arterial pressure waveform(IEEE, 1994) Urzua Urzua, Jorge; Guarini Hermann, Marcelo Walter; Cipriano, Aldo; Matus Acuña, Marcelo Enrique; Lee, J.; Salinas, C.; Olmedo Hidalgo, Juan Carlos; Lema F., Guillermo; Canessa, RobertoAn interactive scheme for the development of a fuzzy logic based model has been implemented and applied to build a model that is able to determine cardiac output from radial arterial pressure. It was built using as input radial pressure waveforms from patients in whom cardiac output was simultaneously measured by thermodilution. The scheme was programmed in C language in an Apollo workstation under Unix. Input variables were area under the curve, ratio between systolic and diastolic pressure, and pulse frequency. To determine fuzzy sets and membership functions the authors used 149 pressure waveforms. To test the model, the authors used 6 waveforms not used in building the model. Correlation between predicted cardiac output with measured flow was 0.98.<>
- ItemFuzzy modelling of pulp density in a mineral grinding plant(IEEE, 1994) Cipriano, Aldo; Ramos, M.; Munoz, C.; Guarini Hermann, Marcelo Walter; Guesalaga, A.This paper describes an identification algorithm of fuzzy models and its application to the modeling of the pulp density in a mineral grinding plant. The parameters of the fuzzy model are estimated using information obtained from a process simulator. The performance of the fuzzy model is only slightly superior to that of a conventional linear model
- Item3-D CNC trajectory interpolation using Bresenham's algorithm(IEEE, 1994) Chiang Sánchez, Luciano EduardoThis article describes a 3D extension of Bresenham's algorithm and its implementation in the linear trajectory interpolation of CNC paths. The resulting algorithm has been successfully applied to a CNC milling machine that uses stepper motors as actuators, resulting in minimal contour errors for a given step motor resolution. A numerical control system that uses the algorithm implementation has been built as part of a wider effort which is to test the feasibility of building or retrofitting machine tools with CNC capabilities at an affordable price tag for a developing country.<>

- ItemGenerating optimization-based decision support systems(1995) Geoffrion, Arthur M.; Maturana Valderrama, SergioThis paper discusses the implementation of optimization based DSSs. An approach is proposed that will enable OR/MS analysts to develop this kind of system much more efficiently than is possible today. The aim is to develop systems with modern GUIs, that interact with DBMSs, and that can be built with little programming effort. Many of the tools required for this approach were developed to support SML, which was chosen to represent the models because it has ample expressive power, completely specified syntax and semantics, total structure/data independence, and lends itself to the surface/deep structure distinction, which makes the approach feasible. The approach is being implemented in a research project funded by the Chilean Government and several firms and is being tested on problems taken from these firms.

- ItemA series active power filter based on a sinusoidal current controlled voltage source inverter(IEEE, 1995) Dixon Rojas, Juan; Venegas Castro, Gustavo Adolfo; Morán, L.A series active power filter, working as a sinusoidal current source, in phase with the mains voltage, has been developed and tested. The amplitude of the fundamental current in the series filter is controlled through the error signal generated between the load voltage and a pre-established reference. The control allows an effective correction of power factor, harmonic distortion, and load voltage regulation.
- ItemNeural network model for maximum ozone concentration prediction(1996) Acuña, Gonzalo; Jorquera, Héctor; Pérez, RicardoA neural network dynamic model was used for predicting maximum ozone (O3) concentration at Santiago de Chile. Learning and test data were collected during summer and springtime periods of 1990, 1992 and 1993. A neural network having O3 t, Tt+1 (maximum air temperature) and Tt as inputs for predicting O3 t+1 was chosen because of its low test error. This neural network model greatly reduces the error coming from a pure persistence model when applied to the generalization set of data (1994). Long-term predictions results confirm the good concordance obtained between the observed and forecasted values thus showing the adequacy of neural networks to model the dynamics of this complex environmental phenomena.
