Abstract
This paper explores the effect of the arrival of food delivery apps, a market that even though is only a decade old in Chile seems to be here to stay, on migration. Using data on the arrival of the food delivery apps throughout the country and the CASEN survey, we find that the arrival of food delivery apps to a city increases migration towards the city, potentially by providing job opportunities that seem to be attractive to migrants. The effect is stronger for migrants who have completed higher education, indicating some level of down-skilling, stronger for those who come from countries with higher shares of irregular migration and varies with the intensity of a migrant’s network, which is also considered a fundamental factor in these types of decisions.
