dc.description.abstractCurrently, teacher's authority rests not only in the school; it also needs to be built by the teacher and recognized by their students. The present study aims to characterize the teachers with more authority, based on the perspectives of high school students from different socioeconomic groups. Information is collected through a questionnaire administered to 936 young people from the city of Santiago de Chile. Results indicate that teachers recognized for their authority are those teaching a knowledge highly valued, they are respectful and proactive.

dc.description.abstractThis study is highly relevant to the pedagogical practice as it offers different ideas for building authority in a high school setting and in different sociocultural contexts. This study will help teachers that seek to consolidate authority based on the respect of the student. It is also a contribution to initial teacher development because it identifies areas and competencies that are necessary so that future teachers could construct their authority in the classroom.
