- Item2 Golden rats and sick empires: portraying medicine, poverty, and the bubonic plague in La Peste(Manchester University Press, 2022) Ragas Rojas, José Frank; Palma Maturana, Patricia Nataly; González Donoso, Guillermo AdriánWith a ten-million-euro budget and 400 extras on set, La Peste (The Plague) – a ten-episode TV show produced by Spanish communication conglomerate Movistar and aired in January 2018 – became not only the most ambitious production in Spanish television history but also an overnight sensation among viewers and critics. This chapter examines how La Peste combines historical accuracy and fiction to portray the role of medicine, health agents, and population around a late sixteenth-century epidemic outbreak. Its release coincided with the centennial of the Spanish flu that killed twenty to fifty million people around the globe. In placing the epidemic at the core of the narrative, the show unveils the multiple yet contradictory ways people from various social groups and backgrounds reacted to the pandemic: either to save their own lives, procure a cure for others, or to take advantage of the crisis. The chapter highlights what makes La Peste a relevant case to study. As part of its marketing campaign, the production team deliberately sought to trespass the screen and insert the narrative into people’s daily lives. This team designed in advance of the TV series an interactive website with digital resources on the history of medicine and historical sites. Furthermore, in the days prior to the launch, several golden rats appeared in the streets of Seville to announce the show. While some viewers expressed their discomfort with the crude scenes depicting poor living conditions, others engaged with the campaign. As a result of this, La Peste constitutes a fascinating example of the possibilities offered by TV shows as vehicles for disseminating historical medical knowledge to a vast audience.

- ItemAgrobiodiversity in mountain territories: family farming and the challenges of social-environmental changes(Springer, 2023) Ibarra Eliessetch, Jose Tomas; Marchant, Carla; Olivares, Fernanda; Caviedes, Julián; Santana Sagredo, Francisca; Monterrubio-Solís, Constanza; Sarmiento, Fausto O.; Pontifica Universidad Católica de ChileFamily farming plays a fundamental role in food production. However, it faces rapid processes of social-environmental change, such as the application of hegemonic agrarian modernization policies and restrictions on the circulation of traditional seeds. Institutional changes are also altering practices and social relations, while climate change is the main factor in biodiversity loss and increased human vulnerability and the threat to livelihoods. The negative effects of these processes are particularly alarming in mountain territories. These systems are considered “biocultural refuges” since they often contain high levels of agrobiodiversity, complex systems of knowledge, and unique agricultural practices with identity value for local communities and indigenous peoples. This chapter examines the role of mountain family farming as a biocultural refuge and discusses the challenges it faces in a context of social-environmental crises, describing cases of mountain agricultural systems in nine of the world’s main mountain territories and showing that they are fragile spaces and highly vulnerable to certain processes of social-environmental change. For this reason, we urge the identification and promotion of strategies to foster the adaptation and resilience of mountain family farming as a way of contributing to the food security and sovereignty of the communities that inhabit these territories.
- ItemAliens, spies, and staged vandalism: Disinformation in the 2019 protests in Chile(Wiley Blackwell, 2022) Bachmann C., Ingrid; Grassau Bustos, Daniela Constanza; Labarca, Claudia; Wasserman, Herman; Madrid-Morales, Dani; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; Pontificia Universidad Católica de ChileAcademic research has paid a great deal of attention to “fake news” and disinformation, but most of this has been in the context of the US and Europe. On October 9, 2019, President Sebastian Pinera – a conservative millionaire, himself the former owner of a private TV network – declared to reporters that Chile was a “true oasis with a stable democracy,” less than ten days later, chaos ensued, including looting, vandalism, violent clashes with police and military forces, and human rights violations. The aftermath altered the political landscape of the country and the daily routine of Chileans, and served as fertile ground for exposure and distribution of a varied mix of disinformation and hard-to-believe real news that further confounded the tension on the streets. This chapter addresses the political, social, and media-related factors involved in such a scenario

- ItemAssessment of Water Markets in Chile(Edward Elgar, 2021) Donoso H., Guillermo; Rivera Bravo, Daniela Pilar; Barria, Pilar; Chadwick, Cristian; Wheeler, Sarah; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; Universidad de ChileChile was an early adopter of water rights (WR) markets. WR markets have been documented and are driven by demand from relatively high-valued water uses. WR markets in Chile face many challenges in order for it to deliver its full potential as an efficient water allocation mechanism. The objective of this chapter is to apply the WMRA framework to detect those issues that must be considered in order establish an effective water allocation mechanism based on a WR market. The analysis indicates that although weaknesses exist, Chile has significantly advanced in achieving Trade Step 2 of the WMRA framework.

- ItemBackground on Continuities and Discontinuities in the Transition from Early Childhood Education to Primary: The Chilean Case(Springer, Cham, 2022) Narea Biscupovich, Marigen Soledad; Godoy, Felipe; Treviño Villarreal, Juan Ernesto; Urbina-García, Angel; Perry, Bob; Dockett, Sue; Jindal-Snape, Divya; García-Cabrero, BenildeThis chapter analyses how early childhood and primary education are articulated to facilitate children’s transition in Chile in terms of institutional arrangements, curricular differentiation, and pedagogical interactions of both levels. It considers to what extent this articulation fosters either a smooth and child-respectful transition or a greater schoolification of the early childhood education (ECE) system. There have been advances in favour of having a smoother transition. The 2 years of kindergarten (for children aged 5 and 6) were included in primary schools, with the aim of easing the transition. Undoubtedly, the transition can be done more organically, but this has also led to greater schoolification. Regarding the curriculum, there are essential differences between the two levels. Notably, while personal, social, and emotional development is highly foregrounded within the early childhood level, it is not in the primary school curriculum. Also, there are schoolification problems within the early years of the primary school level. The accountability pressures for this level could also jeopardise early childhood level objectives. Finally, in terms of pedagogical practices, ECE is focused on children’s socioemotional development while this focus is gradually being lost as children are promoted through the school levels. We propose making the school ready for children, advocating for bringing into the primary school some features of the early childhood level’s pedagogical practice, so that it is more flexible and focused on children’s wellbeing.
- ItemBuilding a community through service design and responsiveness to emotions(Routledge, 2021) Soto Hormazábal, Mariluz; Mollenhauer Gajardo, Katherine Alexandra; Miettinen, Satu; Sarantou, MelanieThis chapter explores emerging decolonial approaches to service design in the context of a Chilean education and design community. The chapter draws on reflection-on action (Schön, 1984) about a project that was based on the formal certification of quality, which is an official process to probe the constant improvement of educational programmes of Chilean universities. Reflections were made by the authors, who were teachers, facilitators and managers of the Master in Advanced Design (MADA) of the School of Design at the Pontificia Universidad Católica of Chile (PUC). This chapter shows how a formal and structured process, which is usually based on more top down administrative management, can contribute to building relationships within a programme. The project, which resulted in defining a community, was implemented over a two-year period from 2015-2017.
