- ItemUrban restructuring of globalized territories: A charaterization of the organic growth of the cities of Chiloe, 1979-2008(PONTIFICA UNIV CATOLICA CHILE, INST GEOGRAFIA, 2013) Barton, Jonathan; Pozo, Ricardo; Roman, Alvaro; Salazar, Alejandro; CEDEUS (Chile)Chiloe archipelago has experienced profound socio-spatial changes since the early 1980s. The localization and progressive consolidation of the salmon industry changed the velocity and composition of the urbanization process in the province, generating new forms of spatial occupation. This can be seen in a new urban typology characterized by nine forms of occupation. This typology emerges from an analysis of the morphological evolution of five cities using GIS. The article concludes that the insertion of small and medium size cities in circuits, or networks of global capital takes place at a high velocity, leaving urban planning, a public function, behind. Consequently, urban planning ends up as an instrument of recognition of organic urban growth and not of regulation and growth orientation. This situation of differentiated velocities generates disequilibria that negatively

- ItemThermal and lighting perception in four fully glazed office buildings in Santiago, Chile(2013) Vásquez Z., Claudio; Encinas Pino, Felipe; Prieto Hoces, Alejandro; Aguirre Núñez, Carlos Andrés; CEDEUS (Chile)This paper is part of a general research project whose main objective is to establish a baseline for post-occupancy energy consumption and indoor environmental quality for office buildings in Santiago, Chile. This study aims at understanding how architectonical variables relate to, and can even determine, user comfort perception. Thus, one-year continuous monitoring in several floors at four office buildings was performed and seasonal surveys were completed. Survey participants were asked a series of questions regarding spatial orientation and comfort perception in their workspace. The data from the comfort survey and onsite measurements such as season of the year, case study, type of workspace and possibility of an outdoor view from the workstation were contrasted with the components obtained by a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Three components were selected from the PCA, and three Maps of Perception (MP) were produced. These maps were then analyzed and interpreted so as to obtain information on the general perception of thermal and lighting comfort at workspaces within several office buildings in Santiago.

- ItemLiberalization of the Interurban Coach Market in Germany –Do Attitudes and Perceptions Drive the Choice between Rail and Coach?(2014) Bahamonde Birke, Francisco José; Ortuzar Alessandri, Juan De Dios; CEDEUS (Chile)In January 2013 the interurban passenger transport market in Germany was liberalized and several coach carriers emerged offering an alternative to the Deutsche Bahn, a state owned rail monopoly. The coach carriers have attempted to position themselves not just through lower prices but also through product differentiation, for example marketing their services as the most ecological way to travel. Hence, it is important to consider attitudes and perceptions when analyzing this market. One year after liberalization we conducted a stated-choice experiment among students and employees at the Technical University of Berlin, where participants had to choose between different interurban public transport alternatives (regional and intercity trains or interurban coaches). Additionally, the experiment gathered perception and attitudinal indicators used to construct latent variables. Our results show that attitudes and perceptions indeed affect the way individuals choose between different transport modes and, therefore, they must be taken into account when analyzing the interurban passenger market in Germany.
