- ItemCollusion, cyclical demand and capacity constraints : evidence from the chicken industry in Chile(2012) González Lira, Andrés; Bobenrieth H., Eugenio S.; Montero Ayala, Juan Pablo; Sanchez, José Miguel; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Instituto de EconomíaIt is well known that cartels need to manipulate margins over the business cycle in order to enforce collusion amongst impatient firms, and that the specific evolution of these margins depends on the existence of capacity constraints. However, the literature has been largely silent about collusive pricing in presence of softer capacity constraints. We find that under a lax capacity constraint, the evolution of margins over the cycle depends on the degree of impatience of cartel's members; margins increase during booms when firms are patient and decrease when firms are impatient. This theoretical finding has relevant implications for empirical tests of collusion based on the observation of margins over the business cycle, which we discuss using an innovative test for collusion within the Chicken Industry in Chile.

- ItemRevenue management for intercity buses(2014) Salgado Gil, Pedro Pablo; Harrison Vergara, Rodrigo José; Sanchez, José Miguel; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Instituto de EconomíaRevenue management has changed the scenario for most businesses as technological developments have allowed revenue management to expand into a vast forecasting. Intercity buses are not an exception. The literature have previously treated this industry as an extension of the airline industry, but non-overbooking practices, limited capacity, non-alliances and huge data volumes distinguish the short-run decisions of firms, with the goal of generating an accurate forecast through use of simple algorithms that manage the huge data volumes that intercity buses have at their disposal. In this model, firms maximize their total income using indirect discrimination, which is the main objective of the RM.
- ItemSymmetrical punishments, price wars and collusion in durable goods with imperfect public monitoring(2012) Ide Carvallo, Enrique Eduardo; Sanchez, José Miguel; Montero Ayala, Juan Pablo; Bobenrieth H., Eugenio S.; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Instituto de EconomíaIt is well-known that consumers' intertemporal incentives may play a key role on the potential of rms to sustain collusion. All previous e orts studying the topic however, assumed perfect observability of actions. I consider a stylized model of collusion in durable goods with imperfect public monitoring, and document a series of new insights. In particular, results indicate that \price wars" may be an ine ciently costly discipline mechanism even when compared to other strongly symmetrical punishments, as they induce consumers to delay purchases. This could have important implication on the election of punishment procedures by cartels, and in the characterization of optimal collusion schemes. JEL Classi cation Codes: L12, L13, D43.
