Two Pioneer Projects of Symbolic (and Material) Exchange between Latin America and China(ARIADNA EDICIONES & SAINT PETERSBURG STATE UNIV, 2020) Locane, Jorge J.; Montt Strabucchi, MariaThis article examines the magazines Cultura china and Capricornio, pioneering publications that, during the 1950s and 1960s, focused on "New China" and emerged as cultural mediators between China and Argentina, and, by extension, Latin America. This, while relations between China and the Soviet Union deteriorated and before the beginning of the Cultural Revolution. Unlike other studies which focus on the international advance of Maoism, we aim to explore the role assigned to culture, literature, theater and the arts in general, based on the hypothesis that, through these first contacts, a basis for future commercial links was being created, thus hinting at an alternative geopolitical order with a provincialized Europe.

- ItemEmerging Pan-Asian Identities in Chile in #StopAsianHate(2022) Montt Strabucchi, MariaThis position paper highlights the emergence of "Asian Chilean" identities and "anti-Asian racism" discourses during #StopAsianHate social media campaigns in Chile. We argue that while panethnicity can critically respond to and visibilise the shared racialisation of ethnic Chinese and Asian persons in South American contexts, public discussions must also distinguish between ethnic Chinese persons, Chinese-owned private and state enterprises, and the PRC government, as well as highlighting the diversity within these groups and others often considered as “Chinese” in Latin America. Both approaches are necessary to apprehend the multifaceted implications of geopolitical shifts in the region without promoting biased anti- or pro-China attitudes.
