- ItemActividad física y obesidad en niños con asma(2007) Brockmann Veloso, Pablo Edmundo; Caussade Larraín, Marie Solange; Holmgren Palmen, Nils Linus Anders; Prado Atlogic, Francisco Javier; Reyes M., Bernardita; Viviani García, Paola; Bertrand N., PabloExercise- induced asthma is frequent among children. Objective: To compare physical activity (PA) and nutritional status in asthmatic (A) versus healthy (H) children. Methods: 81 school children were enrolled (40 A and 41 H). A validated interview with opinions and attitude towards PA was performed to parents in both groups. Nutritional status was classified according to body mass index. Answers were associated with χ2 test. Results: 44% girls, average age 9 years-old. Average hours per week of PA = 2.4 in H and 1.9 in A (p=NS); 88% of A versus 56% of H performed < 2 hours per week of PA (p < 0.05). 85% of A reported frequent symptoms associated to PA. Overweight and obesity were diagnosed in 15/40 A and 11/41 H (p < 0.05). Parents of A thought that PA was "dangerous" more frequently than parents of H (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Asthmatic children practice less PA than recommendations. There is an association between asthma, obesity and less PA level. Parents of asthmatic children have a negative opinion about PA, explaining the diminished PA performed by this group.

- ItemDiagnóstico de los trastornos respiratorios del sueño en recién nacidos con sospecha de apneas: comparación entre la saturometría nocturna y la poligrafía(2017) Zenteno, D.; Bancalari, A.; Navarro, X.; Diaz, V.; Rodriguez-Nunez, I.; Brockmann Veloso, Pablo EdmundoIntroduction: Night Continuous Saturometry (CSO2) is used in Neonatal Units to detect events of hypoxemia in Newborns (NB) with apnea episodes. Polygraphy (PG) has a larger number of measu- ring channels. Our goal was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of CSO2 compared to Polygra- phy in NB with suspected sleep apneas. Patients and Method: Results of CSO2 and PG performed simultaneously in RN with suspected apneas were retrospectively analyzed over a three-year period. A 2-channel Masimo Radical-7® pulse oximeter and an Apnea Link Plus® polygraph with 5 simulta- neous recording channels were used. Altered PG was defined as: desaturation index under 80% per hour ≥ 1 and/or number of desaturations under 80% ≥ 20 seconds greater than one in the whole va- lidated registry and/or hypoapnea apnea index ≥ 1 event per hour. In parallel, altered SpO2C was de- fined when one or both of the 80% saturation criteria were altered. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and Likelihood Ratio (LLR) for CSO2 were calculated. Results were expressed in absolute value, with 95% confidence interval. Results: Simultaneous 40 CSO2 and PG were performed; 80% (32/40) of them were preterm infants, 60% (24/40) males. 38% (15/40) of the CSO2 and 15% (6/40) of the PGs were altered (p < 0.05). CSO2 has a 100% Sensitivity, 74% Specificity, 40% VPP, 100% VPN, LLR + 3.78 and LLR-0. Conclusion: In the studied NB, CSO2 has a high diagnostic value, however, it may present false positives; It is suggested to use as a screening method and to perform diagnostic confirmation with another sleep test, such as PG.

- ItemInfluence of asthma on sleep disordered breathing in children : a systematic review(2014) Brockmann Veloso, Pablo Edmundo; Bertrand N., Pablo; Castro Rodríguez, José AntonioThe objective of this study was to perform a systematic review for the association between asthma and sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in children. We performed an electronic search in Medline, Embase, CINAHL, LILACS and Cochrane databases. Study selection criteria: children <18yof age with diagnosis of asthma and SDB. Primary outcomes: odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals [95%CI] of asthma for SDB were calculated. There were n=968 citations identified, of them n=17 studies were selected, which included n=45155 (53% males) children. All included studies defined asthma and SDB based on questionnaires, and only two performed a sleep study for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea. Mean age was 8.6±2.5y. SDB was significantly more frequent in children with asthma compared with non-asthmatics: 23.9% vs16.7% respectively, p<0.0001. Children with asthma had a significantly higher risk for SDB: OR 1.9 [1.7; 2.2]. This systematic review showed evidence of a significant association between asthma and SDB in children. Asthma seems to be a significant risk factor for developing SDB. However, the minority of the studies based the diagnosis of SDB on polysomnography, considered the current gold standard for SDB. The physiological and temporal relationships between both conditions should be addressed in future cohort studies.
