- ItemA family outreach intervention for engaging young out-of-treatment drug users: Pre- versus post-treatment comparison(2013) Santis, Rodrigo; Gloria Hidalgo, Carmen; Jaramillo, Andrea; Hayden, Viviana; Armijo, Ivan; Lasagna, AndreaOnly a small fraction of drug users worldwide enter treatment each year. We evaluated the efficacy of a systemic family outreach intervention (SFOI) for young, untreated drug users, using a quasi-experimental design in which the experimental group (EG) received SFOI and the control group (CG) received traditional outreach work (OW). Both pre- and post-treatment, we administered the Addiction Severity Index-6 (ASI-6), the Family Environment Scale (FES), and tests of parental practices and risky behavior. Post-treatment, there was a fivefold improvement on the ASI-6 and a significant worsening on the conflict sub-scale of the FES in the EG as compared with the CG. SFOI was more efficacious than OW in reducing drug use in the drug user's home environment. The increased conflict in the EG might be explained by parents' increased awareness of abnormal behaviors and implementation of strategies to protect their children. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. - ItemChanging Communities and Increases in the Prevalence of Depression: is there a Relationship?(2015) Krause, Mariane; Gueell, Pedro; Jaramillo, Andrea; Zilveti, Maya; Pablo Jimenez, Juan; Luyten, PatrickThe article analyses the impact of individualization processes on community-level determinants of health in postmodern societies, taking depression as an example. The analysis shows how the evolution of the broader social context towards forms of organization focused on the individual and on competition in a market economy implies the vanishing of traditional communities and therefore of their health-supportive functions, thus endangering their ability to fulfill the needs of belonging, mutual support, and identity. The analysis also relates this evolution to cultural phenomena and to recent studies about culture-gene coevolution, implying that the effects of community decline are expected to be even greater in collectivist societies. Through its multidimensional conceptual analysis, this paper aims to contribute to further uncovering the interactions of psychological, psychosocial, and biological factors in mental health.

- ItemSaving as a Path for Female Empowerment and Entrepreneurship in Rural Peru(2021) Daher Gray, Marianne; Rosati Bustamante, Antonia; Jaramillo, AndreaMuch research has identified the difficulties of promoting women's empowerment using microcredit, but there has been little research on the potential for empowerment from promoting women's savings. We address this gap through a qualitative study of three women's savings programmes in the Highlands of Peru. The results reveal changes in several domains of women's lives (economic, personal and relational), emphasizing that these programmes enable them to think about the future, expand their social support networks, and become entrepreneurs. We conclude that savings interventions have considerable advantage over microcredit programmes for facilitating female empowerment and that the merits of these interventions go far beyond financial inclusion with significant impacts on women's psychosocial well-being and broader empowerment.
