- ItemAnálisis del ciclo de vida del cobre en una operación minera de hidrometalurgia en la zona central de Chile(2024) Meza Chevecich, Carolina Alejandra; Videla Leiva, Álvaro Rodrigo; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Escuela de IngenieríaLa metodología de Análisis de Ciclo de Vida o Life Cycle Assessment (LCA, en inglés) ha sido aplicada en diferentes industrias. Sin embargo, en la ruta de procesamiento hidrometalúrgica de cobre, aún no ha sido ampliamente estudiada y existe escasez de datos e información al respecto, especialmente en Chile. Un LCA tiene la particularidad de ser una herramienta integral que permite estudiar los impactos generados al ambiente producto de las actividades desempeñadas en la elaboración de un producto y/o servicio. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio es cuantificar, por medio de un análisis de ciclo de vida, los impactos ambientales generados por la vía hidrometalúrgica del cobre por etapa en una operación ubicada en la zona central de Chile. Las categorías de impacto e indicadores por evaluar son el potencial de calentamiento global (GWP), potencial de acidificación (AP), potencial de creación de ozono fotoquímico (POCP), formación de material particulado (PMF), demanda acumulada de energía (CED), y uso de agua (WU). Para llevar a cabo esto, se utilizará Microsoft Excel para realizar los balances y la cuantificación de las categorías, además de Tableau como herramienta de visualización de los resultados. Estos, mostraron que las categorías más estudiadas son las de potencial de calentamiento global, potencial de acidificación y demanda acumulada de energía. Además, los resultados obtenidos se encuentran dentro de los rangos registrados en la literatura. Específicamente en la categoría de potencial de calentamiento global, se pudo observar el aporte significativo de las emisiones indirectas en comparación a las directas, expresado en dióxido de carbono equivalente por cátodo de cobre producido (tCO2-e /tCu). Finalmente, aún existe el desafío de incluir otras categorías de impacto ambiental como la eutrofización, la toxicidad, y aquellos relacionados a la pérdida de la biodiversidad, además de incluir aspectos sostenibles que puedan dar una mirada holística al desempeño de las operaciones en la minería del cobre.
- ItemArquitectura y ficción: Dune y los laboratorios subterráneos como estrategia para la conservación de vida vegetal en Alto Patache(2024) Barros Dussaillant, Olivia; Alonso Zúñiga, Pedro Ignacio; Ruiz Abraham, Javier Ignacio; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Escuela de ArquitecturaFrente a la actual crisis climática y al período del Antropoceno, se hace necesario replantear las con-diciones del habitar, frente a un contexto cada vez más ecológicamente inestable e incierto. Teniendoen cuenta lo anterior, y apoyándose en los presupuestos básicos de la ciencia ficción, es que estainvestigación se propone indagar la posibilidad de proyectar ciertas vías remediales que favorezcanla habitabilidad en espacios altamente afectados por el cambio climático. Debido a las condicionesextremas que caracterizan actualmente a Alto Patache -localidad situada en la región de Tarapacá-,el sitio podría ser considerado, a nivel metodológico, como un escenario extremo con relación a lasconsecuencias de la crisis climática. Dado los paralelos que existen entre las condiciones de AltoPatache, y las descritas por Frank Herbert en su novela de ciencia ficción Dune (1965), se proponedesarrollar un proyecto que utilice la ficción como manera de abordar escenarios potenciales, y comoun depósito de ideas cruciales que podrían ser puestas a prueba en espacios como el desierto deAtacama. Interesa preguntarse entonces qué claves puede proveer esta novela y, de paso, qué funciónpodría tener este género literario como herramienta para pensar en ‘futuros posibles’. Se entiende elconcepto de ‘futuro posible’ como un escenario proyectado que busca proponer lo que podría serel porvenir de la crisis climática actual y la función que diversos sujetos cumplirían en ese contextoextremo. Se propone tomar las “Botanical Testing Stations” -estructuras subterráneas para cultivosde plantas- descritas en la novela, e introducirlas en el escenario de Alto Patache, como un inten-to por potenciar las condiciones de laboratorio que ofrece este lugar. Asimismo, esta investigaciónintenta responder al papel que podrían tener la ciencia ficción y los “seres de ficción”, en el sentidopropuesto por Bruno Latour, junto a la función de la arquitectura y sus propuestas para el habitar enel contexto de la crisis climática.El escenario de Alto Patache propuesto en la investigación se construye/proyecta a partir de laevidencia científica emanada de estudios geográficos, biológicos y climatológicos, la que acompañala investigación de principio a fin, constituyendo una base científica desde la cual se sustentará lapropuesta. Además, la hipótesis planteada, si bien se apoya en el género especulativo de la cienciaficción, busca informar y plantear soluciones en torno a una posible realidad futura. Junto a lo ante-rior, la investigación incorpora ciertos conceptos planteados por el filósofo, sociólogo y antropólogofrancés Bruno Latour respecto a los seres de ficción y los modos de existencia.
- ItemEffect of the heat transfer on supercritical CO2 extraction of solid substrates: Modeling and quantification of the impact at industrial level(2024) Toledo Cayuleo, Felipe Rodrigo; Valle Lladser, José Manuel del; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Escuela de IngenieríaLa modelación y simulación de la extracción de sustratos sólidos con CO2 supercrítico es una herramienta útil para optimizar extracciones, escalar resultados y diseñar plantas industriales. Sin embargo, los modelos de transferencia de masa para este proceso incluyen suposiciones que pueden ajustarse en extracciones de laboratorio, pero que es difícil controlar a grandes escalas. El objetivo de esta tesis fue evaluar el efecto de relajar la suposición de temperatura constante durante el proceso y cuantificar su impacto en extracciones en plantas industriales. Esta tesis presenta un programa de simulación de plantas con múltiples extractores y un modelo de transferencia de masa y calor que estima perfiles de temperaturas durante las etapas de despresurización, presurización y extracción, los cuales son considerados en el cálculo de las curvas de rendimiento de extracción. El simulador de plantas industriales mostró la importancia del número de extractores y el tiempo de ciclo para evaluar la productividad de estas plantas. Un modelo unidimensional para la transferencia de calor en estado estacionario fue ajustado con datos de extracciones (en un extractor de 1 litro) con gradientes de temperaturas impuestos (a 48 MPa, con CO2 a 40 °C con la pared del extractor a 60 °C y viceversa). Al aplicar los perfiles de temperatura calculados en el modelo de transferencia de masa, las curvas de extracción simuladas coinciden con los datos experimentales de la extracción con gradientes impuestos. El modelo de transferencia de calor fue expandido para considerar un sistema transiente y variaciones axiales y radiales de temperatura, junto con las etapas de despresurización y presurización. Una nueva correlación para estimar la transferencia de calor por convección pared-fluido fue ajustada con datos experimentales de despresurización, y su uso fue validado en el modelo por medio de la simulación y comparación con datos experimentales de las etapas de presurización y extracción. Finalmente, este modelo general de transferencia de calor y masa fue aplicado en la simulación de una planta industrial con dos extractores (volumen de 1 m3) para evaluar el efecto de los gradientes de temperatura formados durante las etapas de reacondicionamiento en las curvas de extracción. Para una extracción a 48 MPa, con el CO2 y el fluido de servicio en contacto con la cara externa del extractor a 60 °C, las diferencias entre el caso no isotérmico y el isotérmico no superan un 9%, incluso variando velocidad superficial del CO2 y el tamaño de partícula. Estas diferencias aumentan significativamente hasta un 36% cuando las condiciones del proceso aumentan a 70 MPa y 80 °C, cuando el tiempo de extracción es de 10 minutos.
- ItemInstrumentos flexibles para abordar la seguridad hídrica en un contexto de incertidumbre climática un estudio de caso de contratos de opción en la cuenca del río Aconcagua(2024) Ávila Troya, Antonia Ignacia; Vicuña Díaz, Sebastián; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Escuela de IngenieríaEl cambio climático afecta a una gran variedad de fenómenos meteorológicos y climáticos extremos en todo el mundo, provocando diversas consecuencias adversas en la seguridad alimentaria e hídrica. Esto ha afectado especialmente a algunos países, como Chile, que sufre actualmente la sequía más larga de su historia. El posible agravamiento futuro de esta situación ha motivado diversos estudios que evalúan distintas medidas de adaptación para evitar problemas de seguridad hídrica. Un ejemplo de estas medidas es la implementación de contratos de opción. Este instrumento corresponde a una transferencia temporal de agua de un usuario (normalmente un usuario agrícola) a otro (normalmente un proveedor de agua potable). Un contrato de opción es probable que se ejecute cuando exista una condición climática que lo amerite y se considera una compensación monetaria para los usuarios que entregan el agua. Los contratos de opción permiten al titular posponer las decisiones de compra de agua hasta disponer de más información. Esta tesis presenta un estudio de caso sobre la aplicación de este instrumento como herramienta para reducir el impacto de la sequía en el consumo humano en un contexto de incertidumbre climática, en la cuenca del río Aconcagua durante el periodo 2019-2060. Los resultados muestran que, dependiendo del escenario climático, el contrato se activa de 0 a 49 veces durante el período de estudio. En caso de activación, aumenta el volumen de agua recibido por la empresa de saneamiento. De este estudio se concluye que los contratos de opción reducen los niveles de demanda insatisfecha que presentará la empresa de saneamiento debido a las condiciones futuras, mejorando la seguridad hídrica de los habitantes de la zona donde se aplica la medida.
- ItemJardines de Biodiversidad: Representaciones atmosféricas y diseño de sistemas de restauración y conservación de los Refugios Climáticos de Biodiversidad en el valle de Vodudahue(2024) Aravena Silva, Diego; Aguirre Brautigam, Paula; Alfaro Vial, Pablo Javier; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Escuela de ArquitecturaEsta investigación se sitúa en Vodudahue, un valle emplazado en la Ecorregión del Bosque Lluvioso Valdiviano de Chile, conocido por su paisaje y biodiversidad únicos. Vodudahue es el hogar de una gran diversidad de especies endémicas y actualmente se encuentra bajo la protección de la Fundación Alerce 3000, que se dedica a restaurar y proteger los ecosistemas, monitorear la biodiversidad y promover el desarrollo sostenible del área. A pesar de su buen estado de conservación, Vodudahue, al igual que muchas otras regiones, se enfrenta a los desafíos impuestos por el cambio climático. Los riesgos incluyen el aumento de las temperaturas y la reducción de las precipitaciones, fenómenos que podrían resultar en la pérdida de especies y ecosistemas delicados en pequeña escala dentro del bosque. En respuesta a estos desafíos, el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente ha identificado zonas como Refugios Climáticos de Biodiversidad, reconociendo áreas con condiciones geográficas y climáticas favorables que les permiten resistir mejor los efectos del cambio climático, entre ellos algunos sectores en el Valle de Vodudahue. Sin embargo, los estudios actuales sobre estos refugios se realizan a gran escala y no incorporan dinámicas específicas de especies ni factores microclimáticos, lo cual limita su efectividad en la protección de la biodiversidad local y que, si se añade al aumento de las temperaturas y la reducción de precipitaciones, podrían llevar a la extinción de especies pertenecientes a ecosistemas de pequeña escala dentro del bosque.En consecuencia, esta investigación examina cómo se manifiesta el cambio climático en Vodudahue. Esto se hace a través de un estudio detallado de los componentes atmosféricos, las alteraciones climáticas y las dinámicas ecosistémicas, en particular en los microecosistemas conformados por herbáceas, briófitas y líquenes que están en riesgo debido a cambios bruscos en su hábitat en relación a temperatura, humedad atmosférica, asoleamiento y exposición a los vientos. Se establece que, a diferencia de las especies más robustas como árboles y arbustos, cuya protección se sostiene en planificaciones de macro escala, zonificación, reproducción asistida y forestación, la protección de ecosistemas más frágiles requiere de conservar condiciones atmosféricas, específicas y particulares, que posibilitan estas formas de vida.Se postula que los Refugios Climáticos de Biodiversidad, entendidos como territorios de una escala mayor, pueden ser diseñados desde sitios de menor tamaño que, en la escala del jardín, operen como un sistema que promueva la conservación de los distintos ecosistemas locales, basándose en un análisis detallado de las condiciones microclimáticas, hábitat y dinámicas de especies. En esta visión de conservación, la apariencia estética del jardín se combina con su funcionalidad ecológica, al ofrecer nuevas condiciones para el desarrollo y restauración de ecosistemas que han sido degradados, en donde los jardines operarán como nodos para el control y monitoreo ambiental, permitiendo no solo la conservación de la biodiversidad sino también, la investigación de las condiciones microclimáticas que permiten la biodiversidad local, impulsando así su viabilidad a largo plazo en el contexto de cambio climático.
